Theme 1: Instructional Design
Instructional Design of a Training Program
Course: EAC 581 - Advanced Instructional Design in Training and Development

This narrative discusses a group project to create a training program for university human resources staff on the topic of critical thinking. An analysis report and a content report were compiled as course requirements. We began by gathering information about our client’s vision and expectations for the project, and outlining a strategy for analysis: 1) conduct interviews with stakeholders and subject matter experts; 2) review organizational documents; 3) conduct a literature review; 4) administer a questionnaire to HR Directors; and, 5) administer a survey to HR staff. The results of these analysis activities informed the next phase of our project.

Before designing training materials, we agreed on a definition and eight key steps of critical thinking. Then, we created learning objectives to guide the training format, content, and evaluation. Pre- and post-training evaluation instruments were created to assess and measure learning. Case studies and activities were designed to provide trainees with context, practice opportunities, and transfer of learning to their jobs. Instructor materials such as a training guide and presentation were also designed.

At the start of this project instructional design was not new to me. However, this was the first time I worked on an instructional design project from start to finish (from analysis through evaluation). We exceeded our client’s expectations, provided all agreed upon deliverables, and met our own objectives as a group. There were a few bumps in the road, mostly related to our project timeline and the complexities of working with multiple schedules. However, by completing this project I gained confidence in my skills as an instructional designer, and learned how to be a better critical thinker.
